Our past experiences can give us the wisdom to guide and support our loved ones. One Step At A Time is showing a sentimental side of the ghetto youth. An older male figure walks into the darkness of the ghetto, ensuring that his younger relative makes it home safely, and I imagine that in his mind, he is doing what is required to ensure that the road he has travelled is not repeated. The deep blues in the painting, my favourite colour, embodies the sense of confidence, loyalty, and reassurance. The viewer is invited both to walk with the boys and perhaps to remember a time in childhood when they were protected, and guided through unknown places.
